The ALA Pillar of the Industry award was established in 2000 to recognize exceptional contributions that have advanced the programs and interests of the lighting industry and the ALA over the past 12 to 18 months. It is presented to representatives from three member categories: manufacturer, showroom and manufacturer's representative.

2007 Pillar of the Industry Award Winners

Michael O'Boyle, Monty Gilbertson, & Lars Bostrom

2007 Pillar of the Industry Award recipients are Michael O’Boyle; Monty Gilbertson, CLC; and Lars Bostrom, CLMR.

Michael S. O'Boyle, LC, Manager of Codes, Standards & Laboratories for Lightolier, a Genlyte Company, in Fall River, Mass., received the manufacturer award. O'Boyle has served many years on the ALA Engineering Technical Committee, which he currently co-chairs. He is also an ALA representative and voting member on the National Fire Protection Association's panel for National Electrical Code that determines lighting requirements, as well as an ALA representative on the Multi-Industry Task Force chaired by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to study The Aging of Electrical Systems/Products with the National Fire Protection Association.

O'Boyle and his wife, Kathy, have two children, Michael and Colleen, and live in Dartmouth, Mass.

Monty J. Gilbertson, CLC, manager of Lighting Design by Wettstein's in La Crosse, Wis., received the showroom award. A member of the ALA Certification Committee since 1998, Gilbertson has dedicated many hours to the ALA's educational programs, including the tireless grading of all of the Certified Lighting Consultant (CLC) blueprint tests since 2000.

Gilbertson was the first Certified Lighting Consultant in the state of Wisconsin and has been an industry leader in putting his staff through the ALA's educational programs, helping Lighting Design by Wettstein's win the ALA Excellence in Education award in 2000.

Gilbertson and his wife, Lois, live in Stoddard, Wis. Their son, Matt, resides in Denver.

Lars E. Bostrom, LS, CLMR, President of Bostrom Lighting Sales of Raleigh, N.C., received the manufacturer's representative award. A member of the ALA's Board of Governors, Bostrom has been especially active in the trade association's growing government affairs efforts. He has earned the Lighting Specialist (LS) certification from the ALA's educational program and was one of the first ALA members to earn the ALA's Certified Lighting Manufacturers' Representative (CLMR) designation.

Bostrom and his wife, Kathy, have two sons, Eddie and Creighton, and two granddaughters, Erin and Devon.
